Makeup 101: The Best Eyeshadow Colors for Brown Eyes

From Makeup.com
by Lauren Cosenza

This one’s for you, my brown-eyed girls! And we won’t even be needing a transistor radio, just our trusty color wheel.
As you’ve read in the guides for blue eyes and green eyes, eye color can be emphasized by eyeshadow in complementary or monochromatic shade palettes.

For brown-eyed girls, this means you should apply eye makeup in teals, blues, purples, and pinks in addition to neutrals like chocolates, bronzes, coppers, and taupes. So get over your aversion to color for fear of looking clownish or your distaste for neutrals for fear of looking blah, because both can look incredible—and when applied properly, perfectly pop those brown peepers.
We tested the theory on Divalicious Blog contributor and brown-eyed beauty Christina Ballinger. Here are step-by-step instructions for each look—as we’re confident you’re gonna want to try this at home.

Complementary Eyeshadow for Brown Eyes — Purple Rain

Create this flirty and feminine look by following these eye makeup tips:
  • Step 1: Prep lids with a base for truer color payoff.
  • Step 2: Apply a lavender cream shadow to the upper lid from lash line to crease.
  • Step 3: Dust a lavender powder shadow over the cream to set and intensify the color.
  • Step 4: Sweep a dark violet into the crease and along the upper and lower lash line and blend.
  • Step 5: Rim eyes in a plum eyeliner.
  • Step 6: Coat top and bottom lashes in mascara.
Complementary Eyeshadow for Brown Eyes — Aqua Allure

Create this fresh and unexpected look by following these eye makeup tips:
  • Step 1: Prep lids with a base for truer color payoff.
  • Step 2: Pat a bright aqua cream or powder shadow to the lid from lash line to crease. Run same shade below lower lashes.
  • Step 3: Rim eyes in teal eyeliner and smudge.
  • Step 4: Coat top and bottom lashes in mascara.
Monochromatic Eyeshadow for Brown Eyes — Bronze Goddess

Create this basic yet glam look by following these eye makeup tips:
  • Step 1: Sweep a cream or flesh-toned neutral over the entire lid from lash line to brow with emphasis on the brow bone and inner corner as a highlight.
  • Step 2: Dust bronze shadow from lash line to crease.
  • Step 3: Pop chocolate brown shadow into crease and onto outer corner blended toward the center of the eye for a smoky effect. Run same chocolate shade beneath lower lash line and blend.
  • Step 4: Rim full eye in dark brown liner.
  • Step 5: Coat top and bottom lashes in mascara.

Lashing out with By Terry & MAC

From Adventures In Makeup Blog
October 4, 2011

So I took another shot at By Terry's 'reformulated' mascara. Somehow I ended up with purple. SMH. I promise this is my LAST purple mascara... for this season anyway.

I have to say, I like this mascara much better than the original that I tried some months back. It goes on smooth, my lashes don't get crunchy, and the purple color is much more vibrant than Armani and Chanel.

MAC's new False Lashes Extreme Black mascara also arrived at Adventures In Makeup headquarters today. It really is 'extremely' black. I like the original False Lashes Mascara, so I was curious about how different (better?) this one might be...

I have to say, I rather like it. It's very black and shiny, and makes my lashes the same. It's not as clean as the original... I did notice some light clumping. But overall, it's a good mascara.

Maybelline Stiletto Liner

I bought Maybelline Stiletto Liner a few months ago and  I have been using this eyeliner ever since I bought it =) I read somewhere that it should replace L'oreals Linear Intense Eyeliner because supposedly it was discontinued? Not true , but I think they're both very different.

It's the Ultimate Precision Liquid Eyeliner with a flexible tip and it comes in 3 different shades, Black, Blackest black, and brownish black.

I really like the sponge tip applicator because it gives you more control and you dont' have to stretch your eye to get a straight line, lets not forget that stretching your skin can cause wrinkles!
It's also long lasting, it says to last about 8 hours but I probably get around 6 or 7 hours of wear. I hope they come out with a waterproof version. It takes me about 30 seconds to dry.

The packaging is very cute and you can easily take it off with any makeup remover.

Here are some swatches:

Blackest Black and Brownish Brown

You can find Maybelline Stiletto Liner for about $5 in any drugstore.

Clinique Lid Smoothie Antioxidant 8 Hour Eye Color

Clinique Lid Smoothie Antioxidant 8-Hour Eye Color is a brand new color eyeshadow that Clinique is adding to their “Smoothie” Collection.
Let’s take a look!
These are available in six shades and contain caffeine, antioxidants, cucumber, and aloe with a cooling applicator for application. You can use these on their own or with powder on top for a more intense effect.
Shades Include:
  • Bit a Honey
  • Sassy-Fras
  • Cute-umber
  • Pinkgo Biloba
  • Born Freesia
  • Currant Affair
The cooling applicator sounds very interesting plus the fact these act like a primer as well as a shadow seems to be the trend of the moment with both Covergirl and Bare Escentuals having similar products.
I’m not sure the exact launch on this as I found the info on Beauty Insider, a Russian beauty blog, but count me curious when they do hit our counters. I suspect Fall.

Tips, Tricks & Inspiration for your Valentine's Day Look

While love shouldn’t be about looks, Valentine’s Day is a fantastic opportunity to show of your “flirty side” by adding a little extra “oomph” to your look. You may be going out with a special someone or staying home with your cat...Let these makeup ideas inspire you to feel a little more romantic.

Wear red lipstick. It’s a dramatic look that doesn’t always work for “every day” events. But it’s Valentine’s day, let’s paint the world red! Before you just go out and it on, make sure you’ve got the right color. Some argue that true red looks good on everyone, but for those of you who might feel a little insecure try this: If you have cool skin tones (aka “winter” or “summer” tones) try wearing berry tinted reds (reds that have slightly more blue pigment). If you have warm skin tones (aka “fall” or “spring” tones) try wearing reds that have more orange pigment than blue. Also, if you’re wearing red lipstick, I would tracing a thin outline of your lips for a really polished look. Pouty lips are sensual.

Expecting a smooch? Try lip stain
Lip gloss can be gooey, sticky and unpleasantly flavored (I’ve heard guys complain!), so if you’re worried about perfectly datable lips, try using lip stains. It’s a really simple way to add color without the fuss of re-application or smudge fears. Make sure you experiment with how much or how little works for you before the big day, because it takes a while to wash off and no one wants splotchy lips on Valentine’s day!

Emphasize the eyes. Eyes are the window to the soul, so on Valentine’s lets give them pretty window treatments. ...Okay, well, I had to try the metaphor! This Valentine’s day, go for really a really fresh and shimmering look. Pastel shadows are IN this spring, so try wearing coral! I don’t believe that there’s only one color that makes eyes look better than others, but I do know that highlighting the brow with a shimmer that is lighter than the skin always makes them “pop!” You will want your man to look straight into your eyes when he declares his undying love for you, you don’t want him staring at your eye makeup—so remember, less is more!

Glitter and be gay! After slathering my face in glitter all through grade school, I had to separate myself from the addictive substance for a few years before I learned how to “work it.” Now, I’m starting to see the trend in makeup where flecks of glitter are present. Valentine’s day is the perfect time to hop on the Glitter Bandwagon because it’s all about romance and whimsy. It makes you feel pretty if you are out with friends or alone with your favorite novel. Let out your inner shine!

Instant makeover. Want to look a little extra special? Try some quick and easy tips that will tweak your look for the better: Tweeze your eyebrows and use an eyebrow pencil for an extra polished look, tackle problem zits with Clean and Clear spot treatment (this stuff works fast!), use a foundation primer like Smashbox’s Photo finish for more even looking skin tone, dust on a little bronzer for a healthy glow.

Pretty fingers. Don’t forget about your fingernails! He may be holding your hand tonight, so make sure your hands are clean are your fingers are freshly polished. Wear Valentine’s day related colors like pale pink or black cherry. If you’re a single lady, why not have your friends over and give each other manicures?

The Obvious. The most basic beauty tip for looking great on Valentine’s Day is: take care of yourself. Get those extra z’s the weekend before, wear sun-block and drink lots of water. If you’re like me, it’s easy to neglect those beauty basics so let’s pretend that going to bed at 10 instead of 1 is pampering ourselves. This is a tip that will benefit us all in the long haul.

Check out this girl's look:

Model: Valentina Rebolledo

This is a great look for Valentine's Day. Notice how you are drawn to her eyes and lips, neither one overpowering the other? That's the goal: balance. Her berry red lips look healthy and supple. Her eyes are simple, with strong emphasis on her upper lid that make the green of her iris stand out. All of those elements stand out because we are not distracted by skin flaws. Be inspired!

Do you have any special plans for Valentine’s Day? What will your makeup regime look like?

5 Tricks for Tired Eyes

5 Simple Tricks to Turn Up Tired Eyes

We all experience nights, whether restless or reckless, that quickly turn into mornings where we wake up looking just a little less than alert. But as the story goes, when that alarm buzzes, it’s time to get up and hide our tired eyes. I got the scoop from Physicians Formula Celebrity Makeup Artist, Joanna Schlip, on how to look alert with a few makeup tricks.
0203-physicians-formula_fa.jpg
1. Line the top of your eye three quarters of the way starting where the color of your eye begins and take it out to the spot where the crease in your eye ends. Creating a thick line on the top gives the illusion of fuller lashes, which opens the eye. Try Physicians Formula Eye Booster 2-in-1 Lash Boosting Eyeliner + Serum, $10.95.
2. Trace a soft, thin line underneath your lashes on the bottom of your eye. Make sure you avoid the inner rim. It will only make them appear smaller.
3. Smudge a highlighter or a shimmery eye shadow underneath your brow bone and place a tad in the inner corners of your eyes for an instant pick-me-up.
4. Fill in your brows from the arch to the outside of your eye to add lift. I like the Estee Lauder Artist’s Eye Pencil, $19.
5. Apply false lashes to the outer most corners of your peepers, curl them and add mascara.
And woo-la! Grab a grande non-fat latte with an extra shot of espresso and no one will ever know about your rough night.
